Today we decided to get off our backsides and head to Litchfield National Park. The waterfalls in the area are something we wanted to see. Did I mention that it was hot up here. Just thought I'd rub that in a little. Anyway we started off on the trip back down to Batchelor turned off the Highway and onto the tourist route. Yep just follow the signs and you'll be OK. The strange thing about their signs up here is they'll say lookout falls 250mtrs. The thing is there is no sign at 250mtrs, you have to look for the turn. So many people missed them and were sighted turning back. Back to the interesting stuff. The termite mounds in the area are huge. I thought the ones we spotted a few days ago were big well these suckers are like the Eureka tower up against the Rialto. Anyway I thought that this would be a bad area to build but found out that the termites are the grass eating variety not timber. Now I know why I have seen any hippies around the area. (not a lot of pot plants)

Back in the car and off to the first of many falls and swimming holes. The Buley rockhole was the first on the round trip, this was fairly busy so we took a stroll down to see what it was like. Well besides the hoards of people at the swimming area was a group of small pools that cascaded down and on to a small creek. Very pretty. As the area was busy with people coming and going we decided to move on to the next as we were told that there were plenty of places to swim.

Next on the routewas Florence falls(left & above). Well this was an interesting place to see, not only did I decide to go for a swim but I thought it might be a good idea to check out some of the wild life at the same time. Have you ever seen people trying to get out of the water when someone yells shark. Well whilst paddling around someone decided to tell me there was a snake in the water. I can tell you those rocks under the water are very slippery. As I was exiting the water I could see the snake heading up the banks. Two young guys then told me it swam straight past me and was only a few inches from my side. I was out of that water very quickly. I'm not sure what type of snake it was but it was about 6 foot and very angry, I wrestled the mammoth beast with its body wrapping itself around me trying to crush me..... then I woke up. No the snake part is true not the wrestling. Oh, the water was cool but very nice. It was worth swimming with the snake.
Next stop was the Tolmer falls (right), this was a nice fall but you can only see it from the lookout and that was disappointing as the area below looked good for a swimming hole, The features of the rock were interesting but you just couldn't see from the lookout. The area behind the tree looked like a cave of some sort and would have been good to have a closer look.

Next it was off to the Wangi Falls, this is the main attraction for pretty much all the tour groups, it seemed like everyone headed straight to this location. You could see why when you had a look around, the falls were beautiful and the scenery just as nice. We decided to sit and have lunch here and contemplate going for another swim or just relax. The relax part was it. Grabbed an icecream from the one girl kiosk with people queuing for food. It was a bit hot waiting to be served whilst this poor girl cooked hamburgers and other health foods for the hoards of starving people. Lucky for us Gabby made some nice healthy salad sandwiches.

As we were all falled out, it was homeward bound and I, yes that would be me, decided to go the short way down the unsealed road back through Berry Springs. It was pleasant drive and yes we came across a river, not a big river but a river. It looked like there could be fish in that river. Got the rod out and fished for about 40 min. I was then told that crocs could be in the water and to be careful. As I was aware of my surroundings I didn't really think there was a danger. Anyway no fish but was told that the crocs up here are pretty fast and will size you up from a distance and come out of that water before you can say oh S**T and run. After a while decided I could hear footsteps and packed it in. The only reason to stop and fish is to relax a bit, I really don't care if I hook something or not because the scenery alone is what pulls you into these places.
Oh yeah, that bulge in my pocket isn't because Iam glad to see you that's because I'm hot. Nah, that's my water bottle.

It was then back to the camp and into the pool. Yep typical Melbournian person jumping into the pool and it was cold. Bloody solar heating softens you up. This quickly went and just relaxed in the pool talking to the other guests about our day.

Off to Bark hut today which would be tomorrow if the Internet was working properly, this would have to be the worst place for wireless Internet. Anyway not sure if this will make it the stars and back to you computers but here goes.

  1. When you look at the ant hills you will notice there are two slim sides one pointing north and the other pointing south (Magnetic Ant Hills) you can get your true direction from the ant hills.

Love the water falls Tim thought the one with the two falls looked like Jim Jim falls and is not familiar with the other water fall names.

Sounds like you needed to have a good rest before venturing out again.

Oh! just to keep you upto date John lost his job through Hasties Group collapse not sure if you heard this in the news.

Ah! did I tell you that it's around 10deg at 4.00pm so I hope you and Gabriella are enjoying the weather in the Top End. Hope you had a good day at Bark Hut.

You stay away from those water holes that are home to those BIG Lizards (Crocodiles).
